90 Years: Loyalty (5/10)

In the early seventies, Hanneke and Casper Jr. walked through a clothing fair in Paris. There they saw the sweaters of William Lockie for the first time. It felt like a discovery - and it was. No search engines back then, so you just had to go somewhere, look, feel, talk. After Paris came Scotland - to get to know the family behind the sweaters. Actually quite nice: you are looking for a good sweater and you find a family.

That was the beginning of a collaboration that has lasted for more than fifty years. A collaboration based on mutual respect, shared values and an eye for quality. So it is not surprising that we still sell William Lockie sweaters. Perhaps also in the hope that some things will always remain the same. With a brand like William Lockie, it is easy to be romantic: the factory in Hawick, Scotland has been making the highest quality knitwear for generations. Pure cashmere, lambswool, camelhair — everything is knitted locally, rinsed in soft river water and finished by hand.

And it's actually getting more fun, because we now also make sweaters under our own label with William Lockie — with the same craftsmen, in the same factory, according to our specific wishes. And oh yes, of course also rinsed in that same soft river water.

Discover the William Lockie collection, and see what fifty years of collaboration has produced.

Timeline

In this timeline we tell the story of The English Hatter through the moments, people, and products that have shaped the brand. From the roots of English Country Style—and our belief in contemporary slow fashion—to 1930s Amsterdam, when everyone wore a hat, and the Amsterdam of the sixties, when almost no one did. From collaborations with iconic brands to the development of our own collection.

And from that single shop on the Heiligeweg to the eleven stores across the Netherlands where you can still count on personal attention, slow fashion, and quality.
