90 Years: Style (1/10)

In 1935, The English Hatter opened its doors on the Heiligeweg in Amsterdam. That was 90 years ago. For the occasion, we delved into the City Archives. And if you look at photos from that Amsterdam of almost a century ago, you will see immediately: style was self-evident back then.

The average Amsterdammer actually looked more stylish in 1935 than he does today. At least, that's what we think.

And if you agree with us that it could all use a bit more style, then we can do something about it together. This silk jacket, for example, is already a giant step in the right direction. Light, supple and unmistakably elegant. A timeless silhouette, with a nod to The English Country Style.

That style is actually always our point of reference: timeless, wearable clothing made of quality materials, in which you can be the most stylish version of yourself (at least, that's what we think).

The fabric of this jacket is inspired by Harris Tweed — which can only be called that if it is produced in a specific place in Scotland, from pure new wool. We developed our own variant based on tweed, but in pure silk.

Very. Very. Beautiful.

At least, that's what we think.

Timeline

In this timeline we tell the story of The English Hatter through the moments, people, and products that have shaped the brand. From the roots of English Country Style—and our belief in contemporary slow fashion—to 1930s Amsterdam, when everyone wore a hat, and the Amsterdam of the sixties, when almost no one did. From collaborations with iconic brands to the development of our own collection.

And from that single shop on the Heiligeweg to the eleven stores across the Netherlands where you can still count on personal attention, slow fashion, and quality.
